PermiServ was established in 2016, when a family-run printing business received an order from a local council for 30,000 garden waste permits. It soon transpired that the council staff themselves were addressing, packing and posting thousands of permits by hand – with even the Head of Service pitching in to get all the permits sent out. This was clearly neither efficient nor sustainable, and an engineer at the printing business was determined to fix this. Combining a long history of label printing with IT development expertise, the team put together a working model that would convert a spreadsheet into a service request, print merge data on to permits, then automatically pack permits ready to be dispatched. PermiServ had arrived.

After a demo of how the technology worked, two councils immediately adopted the on-demand permit printing service with the management portal. They spread the word, and within just a few months, PermiServ was delivering permits for 25 local councils.

PermiServ now has the capacity to produce and dispatch 25 million permits each year, and currently produces permits for more than 100 local authorities.
