Conwy Council offers yoga classes to improve absence over back ache

Conwy Council is offering yoga classes to employees during working hours to help reduce days ‘lost’ as a result of back problems.

The news comes after the council’s annual health and safety report highlighted that it had lost 859 working days due to accidents between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2016, which was almost double the number in 2014-15.

The report also cited that the absences cost the authority about £85,900.

Staff are being given access to yoga-based exercises which focus on ‘breathing, relaxation, affirmation and visualisation’ methods to help reduce the number of staff absences.

The report outlined that while accidents from manual handling have fallen over the last five years, sickness from musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and back pain are on the increase. The council is also combining efforts with Bangor University to offer a health back programme pilot.
