Liberal Democrats win Shetland by-election

Liberal Democrat candidate Beatrice Wishart has fought off a strong challenge from the SNP to hold Shetland in a Holyrood by-election.

In what was deemed Scotland’s safe seat, Wishart polled 5,659 votes, ahead of SNP candidate Tom Wills on 3,827, a majority of 1,837. She now succeeds Tavish Scott, who had been MSP for the constituency since 1999 and was a former leader of the Scottish Lib Dems.

Wishart said she was honoured ‘to make a little bit of history by becoming the first female parliamentarian in Shetland’ after a ‘roller-coaster’ campaign.

At the start ion August, the party enjoyed by-election success in Brecon and Radnorshire, with Jane Dodds overturning an 8,038 majority to beat incumbent Conservative Chris Davies by 1,425 votes. This followed the Liberal Democrats being victorious in two wards of Gloucester Borough Council in the July’s local polls.
