Following news in January that Northamptonshire County Council was proposing a plan to sell its new £53 million One Angel Square headquarters, the council has now approved the plans.
Having triggered a section 114 notice, banning new expenditure, the council plan will see the £53 million office complex, which only opened in October 2017, sold as freehold with the council leasing it back for a period of 25 years or more.
The One Angel Square building was designed to save money by closing 12 offices and bringing them under one roof.
While the council claims that it is already saving £53,000 a week due to reduced running costs, opposition to the moves say that it is ‘very much a short-term fix, a sort of sticking plaster approach and is unsustainable in the long-term’.
