£7.9m city centre cycle superhighway opens in Leeds

Leeds’ new £7.9 million city centre cycle superhighway has officially opened, adding an extra 4km of segregated routes to Leeds’ growing cycling network.

The scheme has been delivered through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect programme, aimed at encouraging more people to travel by bike or on foot, in partnership with Leeds City Council.

The new cycle superhighway is part of wider plans to help tackle congestion and improve air quality in Leeds City Centre by boosting access for people travelling by bike or on foot.

Kim Groves, chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transport Committee, said: “I’m delighted this important scheme has been completed in partnership with Leeds City Council. These new sections of cycle superhighway provide an important missing link in Leeds’s cycling network, making it safer, easier and quicker to travel by bike in the city centre.

“We know encouraging more of us to travel by bike or on foot not only boosts people’s health and saves individual’s money, it also brings wider environmental and economic benefits, which is why we want to make cycling and walking a natural choice for short, everyday journeys.”

The news follows the government’s Transport Select Committee warning that the government needs to revise its Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy as current targets for cycling and walking are not ambitious enough.
