Brits call for ‘all-in’ Deposit Return Scheme

A new poll has highlighted overwhelming public support for an ‘all-in’ deposit return scheme model with a variable deposit, considering this approach easy for consumers to understand and an effective solution to reduce waste.

Released by Nature 2030, a landslide 84 per cent of respondents agreed that all drinks containers should be included in the DRS, while almost four-in-five suggested the scheme should have a variable deposit. This contradicts figures in the government’s consultation on the subject, where some 57 per cent favoured a flat deposit level.

The government has committed to introducing a deposit return scheme covering England, Wales and Northern Ireland in 2023. The Scottish Government passed legislation last month to introduce an ‘all-in’ deposit return scheme in 2022.

Sian Henley, lecturer in marine science at the University of Edinburgh, said: “The survey results show the British public supports the introduction of a deposit return scheme that puts the environment first. Making the deposit return scheme as comprehensive as possible ensures no materials will be left to litter our precious seas and coastline for generations to come.”

Commenting on the poll, Rick Hindley, executive director at Alupro, said: “A carefully designed deposit return scheme could prove game-changing for Britain’s waste management – capable of reducing litter, improving recycling rates and tackling climate change. An 'all-in' DRS with variable deposit would be the perfect solution; guaranteeing the best possible results by maximising consumer engagement and ensuring inclusivity, while minimising the risk of both unintended economic and environmental consequences.

“The findings from Nature 30’s recent survey show overwhelming public support for such a model. With Defra currently developing plans to implement a highly-functioning DRS across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, it’s essential that consumers’ views, alongside supporting evidence, are taken firmly into consideration. Failing to do so would not only undermine the scheme, but also jeopardise its success.”
