Work on a new £1.2 million cycleway in Harston is to begin soon.
The aim of the scheme is to provide a safe and attractive pedestrian and cycle route through the village to develop local journeys, as well as providing the ‘missing link’ in the Cambridge to Melbourn foot and cycle route along the A10.
The 3 metres wide foot and cycleway will be on the west side of the High Street. The work will start at the southern end of the village, and then continue to London Road.
Improvements are due to last for roughly 18 weeks, and during this period business will remain open as usual.
The scheme is being funded through the £10.1 million Cycle City Ambition Fund programme, provided by the Department for Transport to encourage more people to cycle more safely and more often in Cambridge.
Ian Bates, chairman of the county council’s economy and environment committee, said: “The new cycleway aims to create a positive impact on the community. It will reduce traffic, promote a healthy lifestyle by encouraging people to cycle and walk. The project has been well received by local residents and businesses.”
