Samples of external cladding from 95 buildings in 32 areas of England have failed fire-proofing tests, pushing May to order a national investigation into why.
May’s spokesman has revealed that every piece of cladding that has so far been tested for fire resistance in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire had failed to meet the necessary standard.
Sajid Javid gave his fellow ministers the latest figure of 95 buildings across 32 local authority areas.
All the tests so far have involved local authority owned blocks, rather than private buildings, it is thought.
May’s spokesman said: “The prime minister said there would need to be a major national investigation into what had gone wrong, when cladding which is failing the tests was fitted on buildings across the country over a number of decades.
“Very clearly, these failures are concerning and this is why the prime minister said to cabinet this morning we need to have this major national investigation.”
