1,172 council staff suspended on full pay, FoI reveals
A new investigation by ITV programme Suspended: Britain’s Pay Scandal? highlighted that over 1,172 council staff have been suspended from work on full pay, in the last three years.
The data was collected via a freedom of information (FoI) request, submitted by the programme, which found that such cases of suspension on full pay had cost local government a total of £7.23 million in the years between 2013-16.
In addition, the figures showed that in excess of 5,000 public sector stuff have been suspended on full pay between 2013-14 and 2015-16, including a range of local authority staff, police employees and NHS workers.
The investigation outlined that reasons behind the suspensions varied from staff turning up to work drunk, or having consumed recreational drugs, sleeping on duty and having inappropriate relationships.
