Social housing residents contributed £15bn to London economy, study finds

According to research by the Confederation of British Industry and the Centre for Economics and Business Research, Londoners living in social housing contributed £15 billion to the capital’s economy, in the year 2015.

The research found that over a third of social housing residents work in the emergency services and the same number are in essential lower paid jobs including carers, security staff, cleaners, postal workers and kitchen assistants.

The confederation warned that a severe shortage in affordable homes is forcing vital workers out of the city and that a salary of £59,000 was needed in order to afford the rent on a homes in Inner London.
