Unveiling a long-term strategy for the UK offshore industry yesterday, deputy prime minister Nick Clegg pledged support for suppliers and service providers in the sector as he committed £20 million to support the sector. The money, which comes through the Regional Growth Fund, will be used to fund a new Manufacturing Advisory Service that will offered tailored expert support to firms looking to grow within the sector.
Announcing the funding at a wind farm off the coast of Lincolnshire, Clegg said: “This strategy will help keep Britain as the world leader in one of the most industries of the 21st century. If we make the most of offshore wind’s potential in the UK, it can provide a big proportion of the energy that lights our homes and powers our economy.”
Other measures announced yesterday, included, £46 million over five years for the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult Centre to join up innovation between industry government, and academia and a new investment organisation tasked with attracting outside investment to the sector. The government believes that with the right support, the offshore sector can generate some £7 billion of value for the UK economy.
