A Liverpool Council report has revealed that vacant properties across the city are a drain on local resources and should be disposed of.
Changes in policy mean that more than 60 homes the council took ownership of for regeneration purposes are costing the council more money than it will make back.
A briefing to members of the council's strategic development and housing select committee said tens of thousands pounds per year is spent on unoccupied homes. The council is now looking to dispose of the stock.
The report said: “Vacant properties have a negative impact on the neighbourhood they are in. The proposals will see empty property responsibly disposed of in a way which ensures properties are brought back into use for wider community benefit.
“The options being considered are generally intended to make the properties available for home ownership and affordable housing which is greatly needed in the wards where the properties are located.”
