Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election for Labour.

The victory gives him the opportunity to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for Labour Party leadership.

Burnham won with 55 per cent of the vote, with Reform's Rob Kenyon in second place on 35 per cent.

The Conservative candidate was pushed into fourth place with 2 per cent, while Restore Britain's Rebecca Shepherd came third. The Greens and Lib Dems were fifth and sixth respectively with less than 1 per cent of the vote.

Turnout was 59 per cent.

Burnham currently serves as may of Greater Manchester.

The by-election was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons stepped down to give Burnham the opportunity to run.

In Aberdeen South, the Scottish Conservatives won a Westminster by-election for the first time in more than 50 years taking the seat from the SNP, who were pushed into second. Reform UK finished third and Scottish Labour finished fourth.

The Aberdeen South by-election was triggered after the SNP's Stephen Flynn was elected to the Scottish Parliament in May. Winner Douglas Lumsden must now also resign as North East MSP.

In Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, SNP MP Stephen Gethins also resigned his Westminster seat after also being elected MSP in May. His seat was regained by the SNP's Lara Bird, winning by more than 5,000 votes. The Conservatives came second, followed by Reform and Labour.
