Tower Hamlet residents to help shape council budget

Tower Hamlets Council is asking residents to use their new budget simulator to help them shape the upcoming budget.

The council has already identified savings of £55m this year, but it may need to save up to £45m more by 2014/15.

The online budget simulator is just one of a number of ways that residents can get involved in the budget setting process. The simulator asks users to decide whether to reduce, maintain or increase spending in different areas of the council.

The ultimate aim is to make savings, however reducing spending has consequences on the services that residents receive and users have to weigh them up to make the best decision.

The council needs to make £18m worth of savings in the coming year.

The budget consultation aims to find out which services matter most to residents and the results will help to inform the council’s budget, directing where money is spent and saved in the future.

The budget for 2012/13 will be set by the council in February 2012, and resident feedback will be used to shape the budget throughout this autumn.
