The Monastery Manchester

Looking to hold your next conference or event at one of the world’s top 100 buildings?

The Monastery Manchester’s story is a tale of inspiration, determination, love and community. Designed by EW Pugin and built back in 1872, The Monastery operated as a consecrated place of worship until 1989, when the building and grounds were sold to a property developer for a project that was later abandoned. The Monastery was subsequently stripped, vandalised and left tragically derelict.

The Grade II* listed building was brought back from the brink of destruction in 1996 by a community of volunteers, who bought the ruinous shell for just £1, before proceeding to raise the funds urgently needed to restore this renowned architectural masterpiece.

Having reopened to the public in 2007, the building is now back at the heart of its community, offering a wide range of health and well-being activities such as a free listening service and weekly music café led by Manchester Camerata for people living with dementia.

Alongside its visitor activities, The Monastery is also an award-winning events venue, hosting weddings, conferences, awards dinners and much more. The Monastery has won over 30 industry awards for excellence and was most recently awarded silver for the UK’s Best Unusual Venue at the 2024 M&IT Awards.

The Great Nave is the main event space at The Monastery, standing at just under 100 feet tall, this dramatic space is like no other. The Great Nave offers a cathedral like setting with an urban twist, this space is one of Manchester’s best kept secrets and will be sure to deliver the wow factor for any celebration.

As well as the stunning Great Nave, The Monastery has several smaller rooms ideal for meetings, training and corporate wellness days. All meeting rooms are equipped with presentation facilities and overlook the tranquil courtyard garden.

Holding your event at The Monastery helps us to maintain and protect this important site of historic, architectural significance for generations to come.
