The value of circular steel in modern construction

As low-carbon ambitions shape the modern construction sector, circular, low-carbon steel production is moving the industry towards a stronger future.

At 7 Steel UK, circularity is at the heart of our operations. We recover end-of-life scrap, melt it in an environmentally responsible Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and re-manufacture it into new steel, demonstrating the impact of circularity. The whole process takes place in the UK, ensuring a closed loop that strengthens domestic supply, enhances certainty, and turns potential into progress.

Circularity in practice
The UK generates more than 10 million tonnes of scrap steel every year, most of which is exported. By retaining scrap within the UK and using it as feedstock for low-carbon steel production, supply chains become shorter, emissions are reduced and greater levels of traceability are delivered.

7 Steel UK has been built around circularity for more than a decade. That means collecting and processing domestic steel scrap through our own recycling network to maintain high-quality feedstock for our electric arc furnace (EAF). Once melted and cast into billets, our in-house rolling mill creates long steel products which are used widely across domestic construction and infrastructure projects.

The benefits of UK-made steel
The benefits of UK-produced, low-carbon steel are clear: improved traceability and compliance, reduced embodied carbon, and strengthened supply chains. All of this adds up to greater levels of certainty and confidence for the construction industry.

Delivered through our closed-loop process and supported by Environmental Product Declarations and third-party certifications, our circular steel is supporting construction to meet both regulatory and sustainability requirements. Our EAF production significantly reduces emissions compared to traditional blast furnace production, making circular steel an effective way to reduce embodied carbon. Alongside this, choosing recycled steel ensures that natural resources are kept in circulation for longer, forming the basis of more responsible construction.

Turning potential into progress
Circularity is the future of the steel industry, but at 7 Steel UK, we’ve been practising it for more than two decades since our electric arc furnace was first commissioned and a conscious commitment was made to deliver tangible value by turning scrap into new steel products for UK projects.

By embedding circularity into our operations, we are strengthening the UK steel industry and providing a competitive alternative to global supply chains to ensure UK construction projects can leverage domestic benefits.
