The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has announced provisional investment allocations for the second stage of the Levelling Up Fund.
Levelling Up is focused on growing the economy, creating jobs and supporting communities. It has so far included new transport plans, rail and bus changes and local business support.
The government has announced a variety of additions for the second Levelling Up Fund.
One of the programmes that has been selected for funding is the regeneration of Hackney Central. Benefitting from £19 million of funding, the town centre buildings like the Town Hall Square and library services will be improved to create a stronger sense of community. It will also bring empty spaces and shops back into use and support the local market, including footfall.
The Mid Cornwall Metro project will look to improve transport links in the county, starting with the Newquay Branch Line and extended platforms at the Docks and Town Stations in Falmouth. Benefitting from almost £50 million of investment, four of the county’s largest urban areas will be connected through an hourly direct train service on an existing line, with two sections being improved.
As well as this, the project aims to introduce mobility improvements and better traffic management across these stations.
Finally, £40 million funding will be provided for a new education campus in Blackpool.
Dubbed the 'Multiversity,' the campus will replace the existing college to expand the Higher Education offer to bring new technical and professional learning opportunities to Blackpool.
More than 70 new courses will be added and, developed with Lancaster University, will include automation, mobility and artificial intelligence.
