Southend City status 'inevitable' after David Amess death, says Raab
Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab said it feels "inevitable" that Southend will be given city status in the wake of Sir David Amess' death.
The late MP for Southend West was stabbed during a constituency meeting at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea on Friday (October 15).
In the days since his death, there has been a reignited push for city status for the seaside town which Sir David campaigned so passionately for over his time as MP.
Speaking to LBC this morning, Dominic Raab said it would be a "fitting tribute" to Sir David to give city status to Southend-on-Sea.
He described Sir David as a "terrific man" with a "big generosity of spirit" which gained him the respect and warmth of many across the House of Commons.
Mentioning Southend's city status, Raab said: "It feels like a certain inevitability about this campaign," he said.
"Let me respect mechanism for deciding it but I think it should be a very fitting tribute if it should come to pass."
