LGA calls for clarity over COVID support scheme reimbursement

Following the Government’s announcement of a new legal duty to self-isolate with councils responsible for distributing financial support to low-income households to help, The Local Government Association has called for 'urgent clarity' about how councils will be reimbursed.

The Government has announced that from 28 September, people with COVID-19 symptoms will be required by law to self-isolate. Those on lower incomes who cannot work from home will be supported by a £500 payment to help them through the 14-day isolation period. The Government has indicated that it expects these support schemes to be in place by 12 October.

Cllr James Jamieson, Chairman of the Local Government Association has called for urgent clarity. He said:

“It is clear we have reached another critical phase in our battle against this virus and we need to redouble our efforts to minimise a second wave. This includes all of us doing the right thing by self-isolating when required. We are pleased the government has recognised that people on low incomes may need additional help.

“Councils have led the way in supporting residents and businesses through this crisis and will keep playing their part to support the national effort. 

“Setting up these schemes from scratch in a matter of weeks will be challenging. It is vital that government works extremely closely with councils so they can prepare and have immediate access to data to get support to those people who need it. We are pleased councils will be given discretionary funding to allow them to support people in need who fall outside this scheme. 

“Given the ongoing and significant funding pressures they face, urgent clarity is needed about how councils will be reimbursed for costs of setting up these schemes and the payments themselves.

“Councillors and their councils have been true leaders during the pandemic. When rapid action was needed, they have delivered for residents and remain best placed to understand and respond to the complex challenges faced by local communities.”
