Labour overturn Conservative majorities in two by-elections

Labour has won by-elections in Wellingborough and Kingswood - overturning large Conservative majorities in both places.

Wellingborough was won by Gen Kitchener, who over turned a Conservative majority of 18,540 in 2019 by winning with a majority of 6,436.

Conservatives had previously held the seat since 2005. The swing was 28.5 per cent from Conservatives to Labour - the second biggest swing from Conservative to Labour at a by-election since World War Two.

The by-election was prompted by a recall petition for Conservative MP Peter Bone after  he was suspended from the House of Commons for six weeks for breaching the code of conduct for MPs.

An investigation found that Bone broke sexual misconduct rules by indecently exposing himself to a staff member during an overseas trip. The investigation also upheld five allegations of bullying, including verbally belittling, physically striking and throwing things at the staff member.

The candidate the Conservatives put up to contest the by-election was Peter Bone's partner, Helen Harrison. She came second.

In Kingswood, Damien Egan won for Labour, overturning a Conservative majority of more than 11,000. The swing in Kingswood was 16.4 per cent, with Labour gaining a majority of 2,501

Egan is set to be the last MP for the constituency, as the seat will be dissolved at the next election.

The by-election was called in Kingswood after former Conservative MP Chris Skidmore resigned in protest against the government's energy plans.
