Defence secretary John Healey has resigned from government over military spending plans.
In his resignation letter to the prime minister, Healey said that the PM was unable and the Treasury unwilling to "commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats".
He said: "After explaining to you that I would not be able to accept a DIP [Defence Investment Plan] settlement that does not give our Forces the resources they need, I am now left with no other option than to submit my resignation as your Defence Secretary."
Healey was appointed Secretary of State for Defence on 5 July 2024, after being elected MP for Rawmarsh and Conisbrough in July 2024.
He also served as Shadow Housing Secretary from 2015 to 2020 and Shadow Health Secretary from 2010-2011. Healey was PPS to the Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1999-2001 and held various ministerial positions from 2001 to 2010.
