Town council hires private security for meetings

Thetford Town Council has hired private security for meetings after protesters caused disruptions at previous events.

Police were called during an April meeting of the council.

Protesters from Thetford Council Watch had objected to the council's decision to declare a climate emergency and also to then spend £30,000 on tackling it.

According to Suffolk News, the group, which was previously known as the Thetford Sovereign Council, regularly attend council meetings to raise topics like sex education in schools, transgender issues and vaccines.

At the meeting in April, one protester called the council as 'panel of useless idiots' and the group did not stop talking when asked to be silent. The meeting was suspended for nearly an hour before protesters left.

Acting clerk Alan Yorke has hired the security team. It will be paid for from the council's reserves.
