Work begins at two more locations in Kendal Flood Risk Management scheme

Construction is continuing on the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme, with work set to begin on two more locations.

Part of the multi-million-pound Kendal flood scheme has already been completed by the Environment Agency and contractors VolkerStevin. A section of earth embankment and flood walls will provide improved protection for residents in the Busher Walk and Benson and Sandes area of Kendal.

The riverside footpath has been reopened following the completion of the new flood defences, with some remaining minor works set to be completed soon.

Earthworks to shape the landscape features have been completed and pathways installed in the Beezon Field Nature area. In the winter, this area will be planted and will be open to the public in 2023.

Two other locations, Sand Aire House and Stramongate Bridge to Gooseholme Park are being prepared for construction of flood defences. These include a flood wall from The Bridge Inn to the Gooseholme Footbridge with the aim of protecting buildings in this area.

There will also be a new flood wall from Stramongate Bridge to Gooseholme Park. To retain views of the river, the flood wall will have glass panels on the top.

Environment Agency project manager Keith Roddy said: "Over the next few weeks further construction works will begin in Kendal to better protect local homes and businesses from the devastating effects of flooding.

"We appreciate that the works being undertaken will impact on local people and we will do our very best to keep this to a minimum. We will continue to keep the local community updated as the works progress."

For more information, the Kendal flood Information Hub is open on Tuesday and Thursday on Little Aynam. People are invited to visit from 10am to 4:30pm to find out more information and ask questions. There is also information on the Environment Agency North West's Twitter @EnvAgencyNW.
