Government could ask people to turn off lights to save energy

According to reports, the government is planning to ask people in the UK to "turn off lights and turn down thermostats", over fears of energy shortages over the winter.

The government could use radio, television, posters and leaflets to urge people to cut back on energy usage.

EU members have already been asked to cut their gas usage by 15 per cent from August, after Russia reduced its supplies to the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. France, Germany and Austria are already urging their residents to cut back their energy usage.

Plans seen by the Sunday Telegraph show that the government could ask people to reduce long showers, lighting and heating. The plans also include a deal which could see the National Grid pay its industrial users to switch off to avoid power cuts elsewhere.

Reports in the Telegraph say that ministers are reluctant to ask people to reduce their energy usage and they hope that current high energy costs will help reduce usage anyway.
