Councils named in Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers

In June, the Department of Education released their list of their top 100 Apprenticeship Employers in the UK, with two county councils named in the top 100.

Somerset County Council was 67th on the list with 8.1 per cent of their employees being apprentices and 155 apprentices having started between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022. Durham County Council was 90th on the list - moving up from 91st last year - with 2.4 per cent of their employees being apprentices and 214 apprentices having started in the last year.

Deputy Leader of Durham County Council, Councillor Richard Bell, said:

“It is a fantastic achievement to once again be named among the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers in England.

Apprenticeships provide a vital pathway for people to get into employment and gather the skills and knowledge they need to progress their careers. Equally, being able to attract and retain talent enables us to continue delivering high-quality services to communities.”

Durham County Council have announced they will be recruiting apprentices for nearly 100 new roles. The roles included positions in business administration, civil engineering, executive support and procurement and ranger from entry to degree level, with the positions due to begin in September.

The Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers was launched in 2020 and highlights the best apprenticeship employers in the public and private sectors. It is used to help those looking for an apprenticeship identify opportunities. It is developed by the Department of Education with the High Fliers Research to independently assess apprenticeship employers.

Anyone can apply for an apprenticeship including school leavers, those looking for a change of career or those returning to work after a period of absence.
