Derby cabinet to extend targeted waste enforcement

Derby City Council cabinet is seeking to approve the roll-out of targeted waste enforcement to other ‘hotspot’ areas within the city after a successful pilot scheme this summer.

The council, in response to requests from the public, has made waste enforcement a priority and included it in the Council Leadership 50 Pledges.

As a result a team of experienced Public Protection Officers was seconded from Nottingham City Council, supported by Environmental Protection officers, Neighbourhood Officers and Streetpride Officers, to engage in a joined up education and enforcement campaign in an identified ‘hotspot’ area.

The pilot scheme has seen 69 Fixed Penalty Notices issued in just two months, compared with 12 in the preceding 12 months, as well as nearly 500 S46 Notices.

Due to its success, the council now wishes to roll out this approach to another three areas in the city over the coming months.

Asaf Afzal, councillor, said: “I’m delighted with the way the pilot scheme has gone and the improvement on the ground in the area. The challenge now is to maintain the improvements made within the target areas and to build on the success across the city in support of our pledge to make Derby one of the cleanest cities in the country.

“The work in the pilot area has not only made it a cleaner place, it has also brought the community together and improved community cohesion. It has also given the community more confidence to report issues. This work has been a genuine partnership between the council and local people.”
