More West Sussex Operation Watershed schemes ready

Six more Operation Watershed applications have been approved to help West Sussex communities prepare themselves against flooding.

West Sussex County Council announced awards totalling £67,343.40 were being made, including £50,000 towards an ‘island defence’ flood alleviation scheme, £2,800 t help protect a 12th century church and £2,733 towards a school’s drainage investigation works.

Operation Watershed is a county council fund set up to assist communities who want to make their areas more resilient against the threat of flooding.

In return for funding, groups agree to take on responsibility of maintaining and mangling their projects afterwards.

The criteria used to assess applications include making sure it: addresses recognised surface or groundwater flooding issues; has strong community support; demonstrates value for money; and realises benefits to your community.

Bob Lanzer, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for infrastructure and highways, said: “All six of these schemes clearly demonstrated to us how they would help alleviate surface water or ground water flooding issues.

“Now the fund is truly up and running this year we are receiving more applications and enquiries.

“If you have an idea for a scheme to help your community, and it has wider support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us and we can start discussing it.”
