Following Amber Rudd’s recent resignation, Theresa May has announced that Sajid Javid has been named as the new Home Secretary.
Javid, who has has held the position of Communities, Local Government and Housing Secretary since July 2016, also previously held cabinet positions as Business Secretary and Culture Secretary.
Former Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire will return to the cabinet as Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary. Brokenshire had resigned as Northern Ireland Secretary in January on health grounds due to an upcoming lung operation.
Rudd resigned from her cabinet position on 29 April, conceding that she had ‘inadvertently misled’ MPs over what she knew about immigration targets. A leak appeared to show she was aware of targets for removing people who were in the country illegally, adding fuel to the Windrush-generation residents debate that has stunned government in recent weeks.
Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Javid, the son of a Pakistani bus driver whose family came to the UK in the 1960s, said that the Windrush scandal was ‘very personal’ to him as ‘it could have been Mum, Dad or me’.
