Better flood protection for 300,000 homes

As part of the Autumn Statement and Spending Review, Chancellor George Osborne has claimed that 300,000 homes will be better protected from flooding by 2021 following a £2.3 billion investment in flood defence schemes.

The £2.3 billion will benefit 1,500 flood defence schemes across the country, including improvements to sea defences at Rossall in Lancashire which will reduce the risk of flooding for 7,500 homes, and money to protect 3,000 residential properties and 500 businesses in Leeds city centre.

Osborne also said that Defra’s budget is falling by 15 per cent, but warned that the government will not be making them mistake of trying to privatise forestry again.
