Hundreds of child migrants expected to arrive in UK

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has announced that ‘several hundred’ more children are due to arrive in Britain following the dismantlement of Calais’s ‘Jungle’ camp.

Rudd explained that more children are set to arrive in addition to the 200 children who have already been transported. The delays in processing vulnerable children have been attributed to French officials not granting access to the camp sooner.

The news comes as almost 2,000 migrants have been moved away from the Jungle and around a third of the camp cleared.

In an address to MPs the Home Secretary explained that children desiring to come to the UK will be selected on the basis of three factors, including: how likely they were to be granted refugee status, whether they were aged 12 years or under, and whether they were at high risk of sexual exploitation.

So far 800 children have already been interviewed by UK officials in the camp - although some interviews with children had to be ‘paused’ for staff safety reasons.

Rudd said: "The rise in the number of people has led some in France to question the Le Touquet agreement.

"This agreement has helped us better protect our borders, and ensured strong trade links between Britain and France. By clearing the camp, we can help secure the future of the juxtaposed controls, as well as playing our part to help those most in need in Calais."
