Govt plans overhaul for UK's business broadband subsidy
As reported by the Financial Times, just £7.5 million of the £100 million made available to help companies upgrade their connectivity has been allocated.
So with six months to go until the end of the scheme in March 2015, the government is contemplating a change of approach.
Under the current initiative, small businesses across 22 major cities are able to apply for vouchers worth up to £3,000 to install super-fast connections.
However, critics have claimed the scheme is poorly understood by business leaders - explaining the relative lack of voucher applications so far.
The Financial Times said the Super-Connected Cities scheme will be streamlined this week and relaunched with a £2 million advertising campaign.
A number of service providers are believed to be introducing new offers for businesses, in a bid to encourage more applications.
Communications Minister Ed Vaizey said the improvements would bring a "step change and a change of gear".
“It is a phase-one scheme. 6,000 businesses have signed which is pretty successful,” he told the news provider.
"It is a demand-led scheme and it is important to get the details right. Registration will be made as simple as possible."
