Brokenshire steps down as Communities Secretary

James Brokenshire, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, has announced he is leaving the cabinet and returning to backbench politics.

Brokenshire was first elected as an MP in 2005, before serving former Prime Minister David Cameron as Immigration Minister at the Home Office until 2016, when new Prime Minister Theresa May chose him to serve as Northern Ireland Secretary until 2018, when he oversaw the Stormont Deadlock.

New Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reshuffling his cabinet having defeated Jeremy Hunt in the Conservative Party leadership vote.

Alongside Brokenshire, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Chancellor Philip Hammond, Transaport Secretary Chris Grayling, Education Secretary Damian Hinds and Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt have also left their posts.
