Most productive councils in England list released

As part of a new report, iMPOWER has published its list of the most productive councils in England with Leicestershire retaining it’s number one ranking.

The Which Councils Are Best? report advocates for the introduction of a productivity approach in local government, arguing that too much focus is being given to the amount of funding that councils receive rather than focusing on how the money is spent.

A productivity approach measures performance against outcomes, per pound invested. The iMPOWER iNDEX measures productivity through six different lenses: children’s social care; older people; all age disability; health and social care interface; housing and homelessness; and waste and recycling.

Following Leicestershire County Council in the rankings is East Riding of Yorkshire, Wigan Council, Gloucestershire County Council and the London Borough of Havering. Havering climbed from 48th on the list last year to feature in fifth position this time round, whereas the other top four also featured in the top 10 list in 2017.

The other five councils on the list are: Redbridge, Essex, Windsor and Maidenhead, Rutland and Derbyshire.
