Home Secretary to discuss Police protection for MPs after David Amess murder

MPs could be given police protection while they carry out constituency surgeries, the home secretary Priti Patel has told Sky News.

She said the measure was under consideration in the wake of the killing of Conservative MP Sir David Amess.

The Southend West MP was stabbed multiple times at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex on Friday afternoon in an incident that is being treated as terror-related.

The suspect held on suspicion of murder is named Ali Harbi Ali, the son of a former senior Somali government official, Sky News understands.

His death has sparked a debate about MPs' safety and if more should be done to protect them.

Ms Patel said "immediate" security changes are being offered to MPs after the killing and they are being asked to share their whereabouts with police, but she said she did not think it should change the nature of the relationship between MPs and constituencies.
