Three forces 'failed to record 40,000 crimes'

New figures by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) have shown that three police forces failed to record 40,000 reported crimes, including violent offences.

The inspectorate has therefore rated Kent and Cheshire as inadequate, while Cambridgeshire requires improvement, with Kent’s performance noted as having ‘slipped significantly’. Insp Zoe Billingham reported ‘poor supervision’ at Kent, with audit inconsistencies leading to ‘false-positive’ results.

Billingham also said that Cambridgeshire had implemented previous recommendations, but was found to be only ‘accurately recording about 88 per cent of all crime reported to it’.

Insp Mike Cunningham reported that, whilst Cheshire had improved, it failed to record more than 11,600 crimes - although ‘serious crimes such as violence and sexual offences were being actively investigated but had not been recorded as a crime’.

The three police forces are the latest to be inspected as part of a programme across forces in England and Wales.
