After winning more than 500 seats in local elections and gaining control of another 30 councils, the party now accounts for 40.6 per cent of LGA members. This is a slight dominance over the Labour party, who make up 40 per cent.
The remaining seats in the LGA is made up of Liberal Democrats who equate 9.6 per cent of its members, with the remaining 10.1 per cent compromising other parties.
Chair of the LGA, David Sparks, said: “The LGA will continue to be a united voice for councils and press the new government on the big issues and challenges that lie ahead.
“We will work to ensure local authorities are adequately funded and given long-term certainty through multi-year spending allocations, as well as calling for government to address the pressing need to tackle the unsustainable pressure facing our social care system.”
