Reforms made to legislation on conviction disclosure

Justice Minister Simon Hughes said: “The Coalition government is committed to making sure that offenders take responsibility for their actions. But we also need to make sure that ex-offenders are able to contribute to society by getting an honest job and putting their offending behind them.”

Under the new system, rehabilitation periods door minor offences will comprise the length of sentence plus an additional specified period.

All offenders will still be required to declare convictions when applying for jobs in sensitive workplaces such as schools and hospitals. The most serious offenders must declare convictions for the rest of their lives when applying for any job.
