Reorganisation plans abandoned in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire County Council has abandoned its reorganisation plans, which the authority had claimed could save the authority millions each year.

The plans, which included scrapping its district and borough councils and creating one ‘super council’, have now been shelved. Kay Cuts, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said that now that she has realised that her views are not universally supported, the plans would be paused.

The council, which has spent £120,000 on the first phase of the consultation, has abandoned the proposed vote on 13 December. The plans may be revisited after the local elections in the county next May.

Cutts said: “Everyone knows I believe that the current system of local government is unsustainable. Our outline business case supports my view that there is a better way to plan and deliver services for local people who pay for them out of their taxes. However, I accept that my view is not universally supported. After meeting with district council leaders and chief executives and after much reflection, I have decided to withdraw the outline business case from Thursday’s county council meeting.”

Jason Zadrozny, leader of Ashfield Independents, has now publicly labelled the scheme was a watse of public money and called for Cutts to quit.
