Plans to turn vacant shops into homes challenged

A number of prominent high street decision makers are fighting government plans to allow empty shops to be turned into housing without planning permission.

It has been reported that Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick wants to make it easier for developers to turn vacant high street units into homes. However, business organisations representing 27 different  professions and  traders, including booksellers, butchers, cinema operators and cycle traders, have written to him urging him to reconsider the policy.

Signatories of a letter seen by The Times argue that the proposed policy to reverse the decline of high streets ‘risks putting the long-term health of our town centres at risk for the sake of a short-term stimulus’.

The letter was signed by groups including the British Independent Retailers Association, National Craft Butchers, the Association of Convenience Stores, UK Cinemas, British Business Improvement Districts and the Book-sellers Association of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
