Think tank warns social care precept overestimates savings

Figures published by the Kings Fund suggest that a two per cent increase to fund social care would raise a lot less than the £2 billion figure claimed by Chancellor George Osborne.

The data, exhibited in the Kings Fund’s national newspaper, has found the precept would only raise £800 million for local authorities.

The numbers claims the five councils that would generate the lowest amount of money as a result of the two per cent increase are all located in high areas of deprivation, where there is greater need for funded care. These included Newham LBC, Manchester City Council, Barking and Dagenham LBC, Hackney LBS and Hull City Council.

In contrast, the figures show that the five councils capable of generating the most income are all in relatively wealthy areas. These included Richmond LBC, City of London Corporation, Rutland CC, Wokingham BC and West Berkshire Council.
