Conservatives take Hartlepool from Labour

In the one by-election that took place on ‘Super Thursday’, the Conservative’s Jill Mortimer won the Hartlepool seat that had been seen as a Labour stronghold.

Mortimer beat her closest rival, Labour's Paul Williams, by 6,940 votes, meaning the region will now be represented by a Conservative for the first time since the constituency was created nearly 40 years ago.

The reason for the Labour defeat is splitting the party, with some senior members and MPs blaming Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer’s inability to change the direction of the party following the disastrous 2019 General Election and others blaming the party as a whole.

For the Tories, Mortimer’s success is being seen as a ‘truly historic’ result and a further sign that the party is building on their gains in traditional Labour heartlands at the 2019 election.

Mortimer said: "Not only that, I am the first woman ever to be elected as MP for this town. Labour have taken people in Hartlepool for granted for too long. I heard this time and time again on the doorstep and people have had enough and now, through this result, the people have spoken and have made it clear it is time for change."
