Estimated to be the biggest project of its kind, Brighton is to receive 6,000 electric vehicle (EV) kerbside chargepoints, following a £130 million contract agreement between Brighton and Hove City Council and chargepoint operator char.gy.
Brighton and Hove City Council is one of the first local authority to use the government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) funding which supports local authorities in England to plan and deliver charging infrastructure for residents without off-street parking. In every region of England, local authorities will have access to LEVI funding, which will allow them to launch similar-scale projects across regions.
A successful national rollout of public EV charging is vital should the UK wish to decarbonise their vehicles, and must keep pace with the rollout of more and more EVs.
Future of roads minister Lilian Greenwood said: “Making charging as easy as possible is crucial to making the switch to electric a success. Rolling out over 6,000 chargers across Brighton and Hove will make driving an electric vehicle easier and more convenient, especially for those without a driveway.
“It will power growth, cut emissions and improve lives in Brighton and Hove and beyond, as we continue to create jobs, attract investment and secure our future as part of our Plan for Change.”
