It has been confirmed that the government's white paper on ‘levelling up’ all regions of the UK is likely to be delayed until next year.
Previously expected to be published before Christmas, it is understood the need to deal with the spread of the Omicron Covid variant was among the reasons for this being pushed back.
The government maintains that recently appointed Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove is determined to address the issue of levelling up and a committee he was chairing had already met several times, with ‘very good engagement’ from fellow cabinet ministers. However, Labour has said that the government is in ‘disarray’ over the issue and had failed to come up with a ‘single idea’ for effectively reducing regional inequality.
Critics have long argued that the term levelling up is too vague but the government has said the white paper will clarify its meaning.
