Commons votes in favour of European Union Bill
MPs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of allowing Prime Minister Theresa May to trigger Article 50, with 498 votes to 114.
Those who did not back the European Union Bill included the Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats and 47 Labour MPs. The Bill will return to the Commons next week to face further scrutiny, before it can become law.
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson maintained the results of the vote were ‘absolutely momentous’, adding that the UK could ‘forge a new identity’ and make ’an amazingly positive contribution’ to Europe.
Meanwhile, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "Labour MPs voted more than three to one in favour of triggering Article 50. Now the battle of the week ahead is to shape Brexit negotiations to put jobs, living standards and accountability centre stage.”
