New low for council workforce employment

Statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has shown that the total public sector workforce in this country decreased to 5.3 million in June.

Figures for local government employment in June stood at 2.19 million.

Representing the lowest figures fro public sector employment since records began in 1999, the ONS statistics show the number of people working for councils was down by 13,000 on the previous quarter and 72,000 on the previous year.

Employment in central government stood at 2.9 million in June, which is a rise of one per cent on the previous quarter and 1.8 per cent on the previous year. The most likely reason behind the local to central government shift is the rise in academy conversions.
