Labour pledges to bring rail services into public control

The Labour Party has announced that it would renationalise most passenger rail services within five years.

The party said, that if elected, it would meet this commitment by bringing passenger services into public control as the contracts expire.

The UK's train services were privatised in the 90s, but some have since been renationalised with operators losing their franchises after underperforming.

A recent YouGov poll found that around 70 per cent of the public support brining train operating companies back into public ownership. Recent statistics have shown that cancellations in the last three months of 2023 were the highest since records began in 2018.

The Labour Party also has plans to introduce automatic refunds for train delays and improved internet connections.
