Birmingham City Council to outsource 100 jobs to India

Birmingham City Council are outsourcing around 100 council staff jobs to India.

It is part of a HR and IT services joint venture with Capita, named Service Birmingham.

Britain's biggest union, Unite, has expressed its fury and demanded that Birmingham halt its plan immediately.

Service Birmingham has already transferred 17 back office IT support roles to India and has issued formal notice of redundancy plans for local workers ahead of the transfer of a further 38 roles in the summer. 45 more jobs will be transferred to India later in the year if the first two phases go well.

A Service Birmingham spokesperson said: "We are exploring how we could utilise some overseas expertise to help deliver a cost-effective addition to our existing Birmingham operation."

"We are talking about a limited number of back-office technical roles. No customer-facing staff will be affected."
