Local Government Association chair calls for triple lock on local authorities’ funding
James Jamieson, chair of the Local Government Association (LGA) has called for a triple lock on the funding local authorities receive from the government.
In a speech at the LGA’s annual conference in Harrogate, Jamieson called for a “a government funding version of the triple lock pension for local government”, making reference to the triple lock pension system which dictates how much the state pension will increase each year. The system aims to protect the state pension from inflation and make sure the increase is tangible each year.
Jamieson pointed out that recent LGA analysis has shown that inflation, national living wage increase and energy prices are set to add £3.6bn of additional costs to council budgets by 2024-2025. He said: “We desperately need to protect budgets and services from inflation”, he said, “without which there will be some real service cuts to some of the most vulnerable in our communities.”
