Dumfries and Galloway Council reveal staff cuts

Dumfries and Galloway Council has reduced its staff numbers by around 600 full-time positions, in the space of a year.

The council has seen full-time equivalent posts cut from 6,025 in April 2015 to 5,353 a year later - a reduction of 672. Over the same time period, the number of vacancies has been reduced from 546 to 466.

According to a report, early retirement and voluntary severance (ERVS) and flexible retirement offerings were made to help cut the number of employees.

The report also included data regarding the number of days lost to sickness among council staff, with an average of over 12 days lost per full-time employee - more than the national target of nine days.

The news comes after research by the authority found that the costs of staff absences was around £1,035 per employee, a total of £6.25 million.
