Manchester: shaping sustainable success

From carbon-cutting transport networks to smart hospitality and global connectivity, Manchester is setting a new standard for sustainable, future-facing events. Phoebe Rowe from Marketing Manchester explains

Manchester isn’t just a city, it’s a global stage for business, events, and culture. With world-class venues, unparalleled connectivity, and a pioneering approach to sustainability, it’s no wonder event organisers are increasingly choosing Manchester as their host city. As the heart of the Northern Powerhouse, the city-region seamlessly blends its rich industrial heritage with unconventional modernism, making it an ideal location for conferences, exhibitions, and corporate gatherings of all shapes and sizes.

Strategically positioned in the UK, Manchester boasts exceptional transport links that facilitate effortless travel for both domestic and international delegates. Manchester Airport, the UK’s third busiest, offers direct flights to numerous global destinations, ensuring international attendees can arrive with ease. The city’s extensive rail network provides frequent services to major UK cities, with London just over two hours away by train.

Sustainability

In an era where environmental responsibility is paramount, Manchester is making significant strides towards net neutrality. The city has set an ambitious target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2038, with a cornerstone of this initiative being the Bee Network, an integrated transport system designed to promote sustainable travel. Launched in phases, the Bee Network aims to create a seamless travel experience by connecting buses, trams, cycling, and walking routes across its ten boroughs. Notably, Greater Manchester has become the first area in England to bring its buses back under local control in nearly 40 years.

Manchester’s dedication to sustainability extends to its hospitality sector. The Treehouse Hotel Manchester, for instance, exemplifies eco-conscious accommodation that was planned from the outset. Opened in Spring 2025, the hotel features reclaimed wood furniture and tree-inspired décor, creating a stylish yet environmentally friendly atmosphere. The dedication to sustainable hospitality reaches further across the city, with nearly 50 per cent of hotel beds in the city centre having a third-party sustainability accreditation, with many establishments having retrofitted older buildings to enhance energy efficiency, reflecting the city’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility and how it can weave into all parts of its approach.

Culture

Beyond its logistical and environmental advantages, Manchester thrives as a centre of cultural and industrial innovation. The city has been recognised as the first ACES European Capital of Cycling for 2024, following significant investments in cycling infrastructure and the cities dedication to sports. Hosting an event in Manchester provides delegates with access to cutting-edge research, industry leaders, and a collaborative business environment. The city’s emphasis on sectors such as digital technology, advanced manufacturing, and life sciences fosters knowledge exchange and networking opportunities that can enrich any event.

Manchester’s Conference Ambassador Programme plays a crucial role in securing prestigious conferences for the city. By empowering local industry leaders and academic experts to champion Manchester as a conference destination, the initiative enhances the city’s global reputation and fosters economic growth. These ambassadors leverage their expertise and connections to attract international conferences that align with Manchester’s strengths in key industries, further cementing its position as a leading business hub.

Enhancing its reputation as a business hub, Manchester also boasts a thriving cultural scene. Famous for its groundbreaking music legacy, the city has given rise to global icons spanning across various genres and decades, cementing its status as a creative powerhouse. Visitors can experience world-class theatre at the Royal Exchange, explore cutting-edge contemporary art at HOME and the Whitworth, or delve into the city’s rich industrial past at the People’s History Museum. Manchester’s vibrant food scene further adds to its appeal, offering everything from Michelin-starred dining to independent bistros and lively food markets. This diverse culinary landscape provides the perfect backdrop for networking and socialising over exceptional cuisine.

For those looking to unwind after a conference, the city’s dynamic nightlife and retail experiences cater to all tastes. The Northern Quarter’s eclectic mix of independent shops, cafes, and music venues provides a unique setting to explore, while Spinningfields offers high-end fashion and fine dining. Live music fans can enjoy performances at iconic venues such as Band on the Wall, ensuring there is no shortage of post-event entertainment.

Manchester’s packed events calendar continues to affirm its reputation as a premier conference destination. Following a successful 2024, which saw the city host global events like the MTV Europe Music Awards, Manchester is set to welcome major conferences in 2025, including CYBERUK and the UK Space Agency’s UK Space Conference. These prestigious gatherings underscore the city’s position as a leader in technology, digital innovation, and scientific advancement.

Event services

To assist event organisers in harnessing all that the city has to offer, the Manchester Convention Bureau provides a suite of complimentary services. Their Venue Location Service aids in identifying the perfect setting for events, while the Accommodation Booking Service streamlines lodging arrangements for delegates. Additionally, the bureau offers bespoke bid production and coordination of site inspections, ensuring that every aspect of event planning is handled with expertise and local insight.

Manchester’s blend of accessibility, diverse venues, sustainability initiatives, and cultural vibrancy positions it as a premier destination for events. The city’s proactive approach to environmental responsibility, exemplified by projects like the Bee Network and eco-conscious hospitality offerings, ensures that events held here align with contemporary values of sustainability and innovation. With robust support from the Manchester Convention Bureau, event organisers can confidently choose Manchester as the host city that will leave a lasting impression on delegates.

Victoria Braddock, managing director of Marketing Manchester, said: “Manchester has long been a city that knows how to host, from major global summits to unique, creative events. With its excellent transport links, cutting-edge venues and a strong culture of collaboration, it’s the ideal backdrop for events that aim to inspire and connect.”
